9 Commercial Road, Newport
Andrew Small’s work, aims to make a misused and awkward urban space into something that looks purposeful which marks Commercial Road as a place worthy of note, a place with a rich and colourful history.
The public artwork comprises a series of concrete clad columns which incorporate video screens with a rolling programme of content loops developed with the local community.
The motif of the ivy leaf pattern reflects the diversity of the area. The pattern is a metaphor for growth, its image and design represents and alludes to a variety of design styles, from Edwardian to Victorian, from eastern European folk traditions to Asian henna hand painting & Islamic geometric patterns.
The columns were clad using black fibreglass reinforced concrete panels.
